Siding is the part of the house everybody sees and the part that decides whether the wall behind it stays dry. Rain, wind, snow and sun are what wear it out, and because it runs across the whole elevation, it shows. A patch in the middle of a wall is visible from the street forever.

House wrap lapped the right way, flashing over every window and door head, and a drainage path so anything that does get in can get back out. This is the part that keeps the wall dry.

On a full replacement we take the old siding off, look at what is underneath, and fix the sheathing before anything new goes up.
